sharing a new podcast, The Abyss, right on theme for March which is Women's History month and an anecdote for today which is Día de Andalucía, a day commemorating this autonomous community of which Sevilla is a province.
HOMBRE, AQUÍ
at a cafe, I see a trim man in a jacket getting what looks like a very pink drink in a sherry glass - along with his coffee. After he's left, I ask the barista what the pink drink is and he says it's a cherry liquor.
For breakfast, I say?
Hombre, aquí, he grins..to keep out the cold, he laughs
RECORDING THE ABYSS
It felt good to make the abyss into audio, especially the second episode which was recorded with a good microphone in a small makeshift studio on Saturday in the Plaza de Pelicano which is a cobblestoned makeshift area, a corralon, full of studios for dance, song, sculpture, carpentry, you name it, there is a small studio for it. Ernesto Ojeda recorded it and also contributed some music. To record, we had to wait for a trombone player to finish practicing and leave the space and then hurry to finish before the guitarist next door arrived.
I don't know how to explain, without getting overly intellectual, that these two anecdotes feel especially connected to what Andalusia is all about. I prefer to leave it as story, anecdote, something you can sorta get a feeling for, sense into, like that, aisa, así…
MARCH FOR WOMEN's HISTORY
March is Women's History Month - (they say, who decided) - and I don't usually go with the program and try to program this for that but it is kinda fitting to have the abyss behind me at the start of this month.
And I do want to share again the inspiration for the abyss: two powerful Spanish documentaries, Pico Reja and A Las Mujeres de España, and a quote from one of them by a writer named Rosa Montero who said:
Women have always had to start from scratch because they've not had the testimony of women before them. And that's a terrible disgrace. Because culture is a palimpsest. We all build on what was built before. So if you always have an abyss behind you…~ Rosa Montero, translated from Spanish, quoted in A las mujeres de España. María Lejárraga
The quote moved me into starting a 13 day blog series: 13 Days of the Abyss Behind me. CLICK HERE TO READ THE THIRTEEN ABYSS POSTS
