7. once i was a stone
In late 2020, I created a new play, Once I was a stone, una Piedra, ek pathar (45 min), a solo work about a stone lost at sea that finds its way home, only to face a new world that upends old notions of race, place and purpose. It includes a short section of kudiyattam, Sanskrit classical theater narrated through eyes and mudras choreographed by Kapila Venu. I shared a work in progress preview on Zoom in December 2020 and then premiered a new version of it in the 2021 Pan Asian Repertory Theatre’s NuWorks festival. I’m looking forward to performing it in presence in the future. It’s also available online and as part of a program that mixes performance and workshops and engages participants to explore their own truths and reconciliations.
